Andrea Danzi
On August 2, 2021 by Jake IovineAn excited young midfielder, Andrea Danzi is another one to watch this season. Playing as a defensive midfielder, Danzi has a good future and could have an exceptional season with the granata.
Born on February 25, 1999 in San Martino Buon Albergo, a suburb of Verona, Danzi rose through the ranks of the Hellas Verona academy. A homegrown prodigy, Danzi was part of Hellas Verona for his entire childhood. With the Primavera, Danzi played in 68 games, the most coming in 17/18. He was the captain of his team in his last season with the squad, playing 30 matches in that season.
In addition to developing well in Verona, the young defensive midfielder was getting noticed by the national team. While he didn’t play as much as he was at his home club, Danzi was certainly on the radar for the Azzuri.
The 2017/18 season was his first true view of the professional world. His performances with the Primavera were watched by the first team, and towards the end of the campaign, Danzi made his pro and Serie A debut on April 18, 2018 against Sassuolo at the Bentegodi. Despite the team going down to Serie B, Danzi played in 5 of the 6 last games of Verona’s Serie A season.
It was enough to convince Verona to let Danzi play full time for the senior team. Danzi played 13 Serie B matches the following season. Scoring his first pro goal on December 17, 2018 against Pescara, Verona eventually made it up to Serie A following a successful playoff run. This season was also a good one for international duty. Danzi played 5 games for the Italian U20’s, competing in the U20 Elite League.
Back in Serie A, Danzi only started one game in October, sitting on the bench for the rest. An ankle injury in January put him out for the remaining part of the season. It was a tough injury, nearing a half-year recovery process.
Slowly returning to the pitch, Danzi was getting back to where he left off. Still with lots potential, he left Verona for the first time on loan to Ascoli in Serie B. For half a season, Danzi focused on regaining fitness and game time, as well as getting Ascoli out of relegation. He proved to be a good edition, as Ascoli turned their season around in incredible style. Bottom of Serie B when he arrived, Ascoli climbed their way out of last and a Matchday 37 win against Cittadella was enough for guaranteed safety.
A great loan spell came to an end that summer. Cittadella came calling in June, and signed Danzi from Verona. Despite leaving his childhood club, Danzi is now in a great position to thrive at Cittadella. An exciting midfielder to watch, it could be a true breakthrough season for the youngster.
