Cittadella vs Cosenza | All you need to know

On January 29, 2022 by Jake Iovine

A makeup match for January 15th: Cittadella have another great chance to climb back into the playoff picture during the international break.

Last week we saw Cittadella drop points to bottom of the table Vicenza, a match where questionable decisions by the referee overshadowed the performance of the game. One week later, another great opportunity arises for the Granata to dust off last weekend’s disappointment.

For the first time in 2022, Cittadella return to the Tombolato as they welcome Cosenza. I Lupi are trying to steal a win, something they haven’t been able to do since October 27th.

Both teams are also looking for their first wins of the new year, as they clash on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a look at the two teams competing at the Tombolato.

Cittadella

It’s been a long week for every Granata fan, contemplating about the Vicenza draw last Sunday. But that could all go away as they try to grab a much needed win against Cosenza.

Last weekend saw forward Orji Okwonkwo make his first appearance since early December, and you couldn’t ask for a better performance. A goal and assist was added to his stats and now is looking for another solid performance.

In the defense, captain Davide Adorni has been linked to a move to Brescia all this past weekend. The defender will once again miss this weekends match due to an injury announced by the club. Adorni’s future will be decided in the coming days as the transfer window closes in a few days.

Tomorrow could also be the debut of Ignacio Lores Varela, a winger signed by Cittadella this week, and is listed on the squad list. Varela, who’s had a great start this season at Siena, hopes to add more firepower to Cittadella’s attack.

Above all, Sunday afternoon lays a huge opportunity for the Granata to earn three crucial points. This will be one of three games going on this weekend. It’s once again a match where Cittadella are expected to win, and it’ll be interesting to see how well they can push aside last weekend’s drama.

Cosenza

Cosenza isn’t really supposed to be here. In the previous season, I Lupi finished in a relegation battle, and eventually went down to the third division.

However, due to Chievo Verona’s financial problems, Cosenza were re-admitted back into Serie B, and get to play another year in the league.

The chaos last summer has brought Cosenza in a similar position halfway through the season. Currently occupying 17th place on 16 points, Roberto Occhiuzzi’s men have work to do until May to ensure they survive the drop into Serie C.

To be able to do that, their away form must improve. In the nine matches played away from their home, Cosenza have only picked up 3 points, all of them being draws. However, it’s now a new year and with their first away trip of 2022, there’s no doubt Cosenza will be looking to claim their first road victory of the campaign.

Forward Gabriele Gori is undoubtably Cosenza’s most important piece in their squad. The Fiorentina loanee has scored 5 goals and 3 assists this season with Cosenza. Gori, who tested negative for Covid-19 after being infected, will not play against Cittadella due to not being cleared by local doctors. It’s a big blow for Cosenza’s win probability, as they travel to Veneto with only 21 available players.

Any result for Cosenza is precious in the long run, which will make Cittadella’s task at hand difficult. It’s a huge five months starting for both sides, and a result in this match is critical.
