Cittadella head south to face off against the current best team in the league: Reggina.
Under Filippo Inzaghi, Reggina have flew out of the gates to start the season despite financial trouble earlier in the summer. The Calabrians lead Serie B on 12 points in 5 games, bagging 11 goals and only conceding twice in those five games, which makes them have the best attack and defense in the league.
It was looking like a second straight 0-0 draw for Cittadella last weekend, but a 92nd minute winner from Giacomo Beretta brought Cittadella home all three points at the Tombolato. Similar to Reggina, the Venetian side has started their campaign well going 2W-2D-1L.
If there’s one place Cittadella has always down well in, it’s Reggio Calabria. Cittadella are undefeated at the Stadio Oreste Granillo since 2002, and have gotten a result against Reggina in their last six attempts. Reggina’s last victory over Cittadella came in 2013, thanks to a late goal by Alessio Campagnacci.
But could this Saturday finally be the game Reggina take out their Cittadella thorn in the side? They haven’t had a better opportunity to do so. In all aspects, Reggina are flying in every portion of the game. In defense, they have the best record with only two goals conceded so far, as well as goalkeeper Simone Colombi having the best save percentage in the league at 85.7%.
The 4-3-3 formation Inzaghi uses has brought new life into Reggina. The Italian footballing legend has brought attacking and aggressive football to the Granillo while only being five games into the season. Inter loanee Giovanni Fabbian has impressed in the midfield, and veteran striker Jeremy Menez has already scored twice for Reggina this season having been a key part in the attack since joining in 2020.
The task for Cittadella will by no means be easy. Having already played difficult opponents early on in the season, the fixture list gets no easier for Edoardo Gorini’s side. They will have Raul Asencio and Dario Del Fabro back into the matchday squad, having missed last weekends match due to red card suspension.
Cittadella have started their campaign well, but they can’t afford to take their gas off the pedal heading into the international break. It’s the battle of the two “Granata’s” in the league: can Cittadella record a win in Reggio Calabria once again?
