Cittadella look to continue their positive start to the new year as they host Ascoli on Saturday afternoon.
Following the restart of the league in January, the Granata have collected a total of five out of a possible nine points in three games. It’s a positive streak that has seen them climb from 19th to 16th in the Serie B standings.
However, Edoardo Gorini and co aren’t out of the woods yet, as a large part of the season is still yet to be played, with the bottom four only being separated by three points.
Up next for the Granata is Ascoli, a team that has caused tensions for Cittadella on and off the field. Last time the two clubs met was in September, where a total of three red cards were shown in a 0-0 draw. Both Gorini and Ascoli head coach Cristian Bucchi got heated in the post match press conference, while Ascoli patron Massimo Pulcinelli expressing his frustration at the Venetian club on Instagram, calling Gorini’s team “a rugby team”.
Ascoli have had their own troubles recently, winning only once in their last 11 games. This includes a recent 1-2 home loss to Palermo last weekend, putting Bucchi on the hot seat as head coach.
I Picchi will be hoping recent acquisitions will help bring the club up towards the playoffs once again. New signings including the likes of Federico Proia, Francesco Forte, and Davide Marsura are expected to improve Ascoli’s offense, which have already scored 26 goals in 22 matches.
Last weekend saw Cittadella draw 1-1 to their Venetian rivals Venezia, a game where they missed key players including Valerio Mastrantonio, Alessandro Salvi, and Simone Branca. For the match on Saturday, all three players will be back in action at the Tombolato.
