Cittadella travel to run-away leaders Frosinone on Saturday afternoon.
In one of the most competitive Serie B seasons in recent memory, Frosinone have an eleven point lead entering the weekend at the summit of the table. Fabio Grosso’s side have been the team to beat this season, and are destined to land in Serie A.
Frosinone have only lost four times this season, and one of those came at the hands of Cittadella. In September, former striker Giacomo Beretta netted a 92nd minute winner at the Tombolato, giving all three points to the Granata.
Cittadella have also not lost to I Canarini in the last five meetings between the clubs, dating all the way to August 2020.
Grosso’s side have the best home record in the league, scoring nine wins and two draws while only conceding three goals. The last trip to the Stadio Benito Stirpe for Cittadella ended up as a 1-0 win for the Venetians, who handed Frosinone their first home loss of last season.
History can well repeat itself on Saturday, but it’ll be a difficult task for Edoardo Gorini and Cittadella as star man Mirko Antonucci will not be available for selection for the trip down south. Antonucci, who last week was Serie B’s MVP of the Week, received a booking following his goal celebration, which means he’ll serve a one game suspension. The ex-Roma midfielder has contributed 47% to all Cittadella’s goals this season, scoring eight and assisting one in 23 appearances.
The league leaders have had an unbelievable season so far following an impressive 16-3-4 record after 23 games. Summer signings like Samuele Mulattieri, Roberto Insigne, Giuseppe Caso, and Luca Mazzitelli have anchored Frosinone at top position for most of the season.
With Frosinone on a five game winning streak – and having only one loss in their last 16 games – it will no doubt be the hardest test the Granata have faced all year.
