Two different results | Cittadella’s Weekend Recap
On February 12, 2023 by Jake IovineIt was a tale of two games on the weekend for both Cittadella teams, who both played tricky games on Saturday and Sunday.
Frosinone 3-0 Cittadella
Against the league leaders, Cittadella traveled to Frosinone for their match at the Stadio Benito Stirpe. The Granata were without top goalscorer Mirko Antonucci due to yellow card suspension, and were facing a Frosinone team that had not lost at home all season.
Frosinone showed their strengths early on, and made it difficult for Cittadella to penetrate their goal. The only shot on target for the Venetians came 22 minutes in, when Alessio Vita’s effort inside the box was comfortably saved by Stefano Turati.
In a span of a few minutes, the game was all but lost for Edoardo Gorini’s side following the host’s breakthrough goal and a red card. Following Vita’s half-chance, Cittadella’s backline fell asleep on the rebound following Elhan Kastrati’s save. Sassuolo loanee Luca Moro had an easy finish while beating the offside trap, giving Frosinone the lead.
Seconds later, the Granata were put down to 10 men after referee Gianpiero Miele showed Cittadella captain and center back Romano Perticone a straight red card. Caught flat footed, Moro once again beat the Cittadella defense, and was tripped on the top of the box by a trailing Perticone. Cittadella, who minutes ago were doing well, found themselves down a goal and down a man.
Any chance of a surprise comeback was diminished just four minutes after halftime, when Roberto Insigne smashed his seventh goal of the season to the top corner, leaving Kastrati with no chance.
Frosinone caped off a perfect afternoon with ten minutes to go after Samuele Mulattieri headed home the third goal of the day, following a delicious ball into the box from new arrival Jamie Baez.
The hosts are well and truly on their way to Serie A, while Cittadella still have a lot of work to do to avoid the drop to Serie C. Cittadella are back home next weekend to face a struggling Reggina side under Filippo Inzaghi.
Cittadella Women 3-1 Chievo Women
Cittadella Women continue their Serie A dream with another win, this time against Venetian rivals Chievo Women.
The result is the seventh straight positive result for the Granata, who are now in 3rd in the Serie B Femminile standings, only three points from league leaders Lazio Women.
It took only half an hour for Salvatore Colantuono’s side from striking first in the contest. After a loose ball scuffle in front of goal, Martina Pizzolato stabbed home the opening goal, giving Cittadella the lead.
Within a minute, it got better for the Granata as Caterina Ferin made it 2-0. The attacker pounced on a bad pass from the Cheivo defender, with Ferin side footed a lovely chip into the empty net.
Chievo pulled within a goal 14 minutes after halftime through Sonja Kiem, who rose and headed the ball in far post off the corner kick.
After some pressure from the visitors, Cittadella got a golden chance to make sure of the three points in the 80th minute. The Granata went up a player following a red card shown to Chievo defender Heden Corrado for a last-player tackle inside the box. However, Sofia Kongouli couldn’t get her penalty on frame, missing wide left.
The Greek international was not to be denied a second time in front of goal, with another chance coming her way seconds after the penalty miss. Kongouli made a nice finish to the near post, putting Cittadella up 3-1 and the match to bed.
With the result, Cittadella Women get yet another win as they continue their path towards the promotion dream.
