Cittadella Women suffers promotion blow in Ternana defeat

Cittadella Women are defeated for the first time in 17 games as they suffer a 2-0 loss at home against Ternana.

The visitors posed a big challenge to Cittadella in the first half, and troubled keeper Ilaria Toniolo throughout the first 45 minutes.

Despite Ternana’s chances, the Granata came close as well for finding the opening goal. Veronica Benedetti had a good look when Francesca Larocca served in a cross, with Benedetti’s header not finding the target.

Seconds before halftime, Ternana found their goal through Camilla Labate. Labate found space inside the box, and cut and turned the Cittadella defense as she had an easy tap in for the goal. For the first time since January 29th, the Granata entered halftime trailing by a goal.

Salvatore Colantuono’s side came out of halftime with much more energy, and put Ternana under pressure.

Cittadella’s biggest chance of the second half and quite possible the game happened in the 59th minute. Laura Peruzzo’s free kick was served right in front of goal that was awkward for keeper Katia Ghioc, who initially made the save. The ball was difficult for Caterina Ambrosi in front of goal, who couldn’t generate any power behind the shot.

The Granata huffed and puffed in front of a stubborn Ternana defense. Substitute Alice Begal came close again for the hosts as her half volley flew centimeters wide of the goal frame.

The dagger came in the 88th minute off a fast break for Ternana, as Julia Mateus slotted home a one vs one to make sure of the three points for the visitors.

With two games remaining in the season, Cittadella now find themselves not in control of their destiny, as they need to beat 1st place Napoli next weekend and need help from other teams to guarantee themselves a chance at promotion.
