Here’s how Cittadella can clinch safety on Friday.
On May 14, 2023 by Jake IovineCittadella have taken their quest for salvation in Serie B to the final day against Como, and lucky for them they are in full control of their faith.
Edoardo Gorini’s team picked up a draw against Südtirol on Saturday, keeping the Granata above the relegation zone by two points entering the final match next Friday.
The home finale will be contested against Como, who are safe thanks to their 3-1 win against Ternana. Matchday 38 will have all 20 teams play simultaneously at 20:30 local time.
Still, however, Gorini’s team know a win would guarantee themselves in next years Serie B season. Three points and Cittadella are in. That’s the most simple outcome.
A draw against Como would also be enough for Cittadella, assuming Cosenza don’t beat Cagliari by more than 11 goals. Thanks to the Granata drawing Cosenza twice this season, the next tiebreaker between the two teams would be goal difference, where Cittadella have a massive advantage over the Calabrian team.
Barring a record breaking win from Cosenza, a draw for Citta will be enough to stay up. A loss, however, would make things very hairy.
If Gorini and co end up empty handed, they will have to rely on the scoreboard for favorable results. If Cosenza can pick up three points, Cittadella will end up in the relegation play-out if they can’t get at least a point in their game.
There’s also another bizarre scenario which involves goal difference as well: Cittadella can still be caught by 17th place Brescia, who sit three points behind the Venetians. However, similar to the situation with Cosenza, goal difference would be used as the tiebreaker, and the Granata have a big edge with that.
Assuming Brescia don’t beat Palermo in Sicily by a landslide victory, Cittadella won’t have to worry about them.
In short, Cittadella should only focus on one outcome: a win at home. A draw would also practically give them a place in the Serie B 23/24 season. A loss on Friday would have Granata fans very concerned as they would need help from Cagliari and Palermo.
