The final matchday in the Serie B 2022/23 season is here, and both Cittadella and Como have something to play for on the final match of the regular season.
Following their 1-1 draw against Südtirol on Saturday, Cittadella know they only need a draw on Friday to ensure a spot in next year’s championship. The Granata have collected five points in their last three games, keeping their heads above the relegation play-out zone.
Como clinched safety last weekend after their 3-1 home win against Ternana, which now gives Moreno Longo’s team a slight possibility of making the promotion playoffs as they battle with five other teams for the last two playoff tickets.
It’s been a difficult season for Cittadella, but they can brush all of it aside and start over again with a result at the Tombolato on Friday night. The Granata will have to finish the mission without two key starters: goalkeeper Elhan Kastrati and defender Romano Perticone, who are disqualified via yellow card accumulation.
If their opponents Como want any chance of a bite at Serie A promotion, they’ll have to beat Cittadella and hope for other results going their way. I Lariani need to hope that Venezia, Palermo, Pisa, Reggina, and Ascoli drop points in their respective games that all kickoff at the same time on Friday.
Cittadella have much more straightforward scenarios: a win or draw for Edoardo Gorini’s side and the Granata will be home and dry. However, things start to get tricky if they can’t get a result.
Simply put, a loss for Cittadella puts them out of their control of their destiny. They’ll have to hope that Cagliari can avoid defeat to Cosenza, and that Brescia don’t beat Palermo by a significant margin.
A loss and a Cosenza win would see Cittadella compete in the relegation play-out fixtures scheduled for the end of May and early June. A two legged tie against the 17th place team would then decide the Granata‘s faith for next year.
It has certainly been a wild season in Serie B this year, and it all comes to an end on Friday night before the playoffs and play-outs are played.
