Cittadella’s busy summer market comes to a close.
On September 1, 2023 by Jake IovineCittadella were busy this summer in the transfer market as the window has finally shut on Friday night.
The Granata didn’t end the night quietly however. The club announced three departures to Serie C clubs: Carlos Embalo to Foggia, Alessandro Mattioli to Vis Pesaro, and Gian Filippo Felicioli to Pergolettese. Finally, Cittadella announced the signing of young striker Ahmed Sanogo, coming in from Vis Pesaro in the third tier.
Sanogo, who is only 18 years old, made 29 total appearances for Vis Pesaro during his year and a half time at the club. The Milan-born striker will join a newly reinforced Cittadella attack, which saw lots of activity in the summer.
Sporting director Stefano Marchetti knew he had to do something after surviving relegation on the final day of last season. The Granata struggled for goals in the 2022/23 campaign, finding the net only 34 times in 38 games.
Marchetti made a total of 11 new signings this summer in a variety of different positions. Alessio Rizza, Edoardo Sottini, Matteo Angeli, and Lorenzo Carissoni are all new arrivals that are part of the back line. New midfielders consist of Emil Kornvig, Francesco Amatucci, and Andrea Tessiore.
In attack, alongside the return of Enrico Baldini from injury, is ex-Roma Primavera winger Claudio Cassano. With him comes Filippo Pittarello, Luca Pandolfi, and finally Ahmed Sanogo.
On the flip side, the club has seen many players leave. The most notable was Mirko Antonucci, who was coming off a sensational season with 10 goals, leaving for Spezia for a reported fee of 2 million euros. Another important piece was veteran center back Romano Perticone, who signed for Treviso in the fourth tier.
Giovanni Crociata and Giuseppe Ambrosino did not come back from loan after a half season at the club. Meanwhile, a total of 12 departures left the team this summer. These include Ignacio Lores Varela to Avellino, Dario Del Fabro to Yverdon Sport, Daniele Donnarumma to Cesena, Simone Icardi to Ostiamare, Raul Asencio to Potenza, Filippo Manfrin to Sangiuliano City, and Vincenzo Ciriello to Picerno (loan).
This has no doubt been one of the busiest transfer windows Cittadella has seen in a long time. Lots of new faces and youth are brought into the Granata, where they could potentially help Edoardo Gorini’s team finish in the promotion playoffs for the first time since 2021.
