For the first time ever, Cittadella plays Catanzaro in a competitive match on Wednesday night in Calabria.
Following a 0-3 home defeat to Como, the Granata will be looking to bounce back after the heavy loss. Catanzaro has started its Serie B campaign brightly, sitting in 5th place on 11 points after six games. The Aquile del Sud are in Serie B for the first time since the 2005/06 season, and are punching above their weight so far this year.
Despite the setback on Sunday for Edoardo Gorini and Cittadella, the Venetian team has still raised optimism for the season after six games. Currently with a 2-2-2 record, Cittadella sit in 12th place and well within reach of the playoffs, even though it’s still early in the season.
Catanzaro won its Serie C Girone C group last year by a landslide. Vincenzo Vivarini’s side won the league by 16 points, scoring over 100 goals and finishing with an impressive 30-6-2 record. Catanzaro also finished with a +81 goal difference. So far in Serie B, the Calabrian side has only lost once in six games, and have won three games plus two draws.
Cittadella captain Simone Branca came off the field in the second half on Sunday after an apparent injury to the midfielder. Head coach Edoardo Gorini confirmed that he will travel to Calabria, despite the initial concerns.
“Today he trained well, he did everything so he is called-up,” Gorini said in his pre-match interview. “The only problem is with [Luca] Pandolfi, who had a little sprain in his ankle, therefore tomorrow I won’t play him.”
This will be the first meeting in club history against Catanzaro, taking place this Wednesday night in the capital of Calabria.
