Cittadella too late to bite back in Pisa defeat.
On October 22, 2023 by Jake IovineCittadella’s last minute effort eventually fell short in Saturday afternoon’s defeat against Pisa.
Similar to the match two games ago against Lecco, the Granata were toothless in attack until very late in the match. This time though, the late chances weren’t enough to earn a result as Edoardo Gorini’s side fell 2-1 to Pisa.
The Venetian side were outclassed by Alberto Aquilani’s side for much of the game. Cittadella failed to register a shot on target for 87 minutes, and had only one shot in the first half compared to Pisa’s seven total. The hosts also controlled 62% of the possession in the opening half as well.
Gabriele Piccinini put Pisa into the lead after 16 minutes, firing a near post shot past Luca Maniero. Another problem was risen again in the match for Gorini’s side: giving up the first goal. Cittadella have now given up the first goal eight times in a total of 11 games this season, and have ended with a 3-2-3 record. The Granata have only scored first on two occasions so far.
Tomas Esteves’s goal in the 70th minute firmly deflated any possibility of a win for Cittadella. But similar to the Lecco match at the start of the month, the Granata never gave up until the final whistle.
After a pinball sequence inside the penalty box, substitute Andrea Magrassi poked in the ball to cut the deficient to one goal. With a minute remaining, Filippo Pittarello found half a yard inside the box, but fired his shot into the hands of Pisa goalkeeper Nicolas. Cittadella were close to snatching another late comeback result.
The last 10 minutes of the game saw Cittadella tally nine shots towards the Pisa goal, with four of them hitting the frame.
Another late comeback was denied for Gorini’s side, as they look ahead to a Friday night clash with Cremonese at home.
