Second straight loss for Cittadella after late goal.
On October 27, 2023 by Jake IovineCittadella lost its second straight game on Friday night against Cremonese, thanks to a late winner from Franco Vazquez.
Despite having a better game than last weekend in Pisa, the Granata couldn’t see out the draw at the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato. Cremonese put 20 shots on the board throughout the night compared to Cittadella’s eight.
The visitors came closest to opening the scoring in the first half, but goalkeeper Elhan Kastrati had to make a handful of saves to prevent Luca Zanimacchia. Edoardo Gorini’s side went into halftime with the score level, something only done two times this season.
The Grigiorossi continued their press in the second half, and eventually found the goal in the 78th minute. Following a corner kick, the ball fell nicely to Luca Ravanelli, who slotted it past Kastrati.
As seen many times this season, Cittadella responded with a fight and got the equalizer three minutes later. Alessio Vita scored his first goal of the season following Federico Giraudo’s cross.
However, Cremonese got the last laugh with minutes remaining. Veteran forward Franco Vazquez was left unmarked inside the box, where he headed a cross into the net.
Cremonese jump back into the playoff zone going into the weekend, while Cittadella slip into 11th place on 13 points.
The two teams will meet again in a matter of days in the Coppa Italia Round of 32. This time it will be played in Cremona at the Stadio Giovanni Zini, with the winner playing A.S. Roma in the next round.
