Maistrello winner gives Cittadella first win in a month.
On November 4, 2023 by Jake IovineTommy Maistrello netted an 81st minute winner on Saturday afternoon to give Cittadella a 3-2 win against Brescia.
Cittadella were on a four game winless run going into the weekend, fresh off the bounce of three consecutive defeats. Brescia had only won once in their last seven games entering the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato this weekend, and had not beaten the Granata in their last 11 attempts.
Daniele Gastaldello’s side got the perfect start three minutes in after ex-Cittadella striker Gabriele Moncini volleyed home the opener. His effort took a deflection off Domenico Frare, and gave Brescia the early lead. Cittadella have now given up the first goal in the match 11 times out of a total 14 matches.
Out of nothing, Cittadella found the equalizer ten minutes later through Giuseppe Carriero. The midfielder’s cross caught keeper Luca Lezzerini off guard, sneaking the ball in the near post.
The Granata took the lead into halftime thanks to Alessio Vita’s goal in the 32nd minute, which was his third goal in his last three games. Vita’s strike from outside the box hit the post and nestled into the net, giving Edoardo Gorini’s side the lead.
Cittadella couldn’t hold onto the lead in the second half, as Brescia equalized 24 minutes after the restart. Massimo Bertagnoli’s forward run ended as a goal after another shot deflected off of Frare and into the net.
Second half substitute Tommy Maistrello gave Cittadella the lead once again late into the match. A clever through ball from Luca Pandolfi led Maistrello in behind the Brescia defense, with the striker clipping the ball over Lezzerini. The ball was cleared off the line by a Brescia defender, but after reviewing the play, referee Daniele Perenzoni awarded the goal to Cittadella.
Despite trailing in the opening three minutes, the Granata once again fight from behind and get a result. The win snaps a three game losing streak, and gives Cittadella their first win since October 1st.
Gorini’s side return next Sunday in Sicily as the Granata face Palermo before the November international break.
