Gorini claims Brescia first goal should’ve not counted
On February 4, 2024 by Jake IovineCittadella head coach Edoardo Gorini believes Brescia should’ve been denied their opening first goal in Saturday’s 2-0 loss.
The Granata fell for the third time in a row after two goals in the second half from the hosts. It was the first time in 12 meetings that Cittadella lost to Brescia, dating back to Feb. 2017.
After a goalless first half, Brescia took the lead in the 52nd minute when Gennaro Borrelli finished off a scramble in the box from a set piece.
However, Gorini said that opening goal from Brescia should’ve been ruled out for a foul after Borrelli supposedly caught Lorenzo Carissoni’s foot on the goal-line.
“There’s no doubt about it, Brescia’s first goal was a foul,” Gorini said after the match. “Also the foul leading to the goal shouldn’t have been given.”
Cittadella later conceded another goal from ex-striker Gabriele Moncini in the 74th minute, effectively sealing three points for Brescia.
Gorini’s side failed to tally a shot on target in the second half compared to the host’s six. Saturday was only the fifth time this season that the Granata were kept off the scoresheet, with the last one coming on Boxing Day against Ascoli.
“The match was really hard fought,” Gorini said. “Either side could’ve won because both Cittadella and Brescia created chances to score. The match was decided due to a referee mistake.”
Gorini’s side stays in 6th place despite the loss on Saturday. The Granata look to avoid a fourth straight loss next weekend when they host Parma: a team that Cittadella has never beaten in club history.
“We will need to focus,” Gorini said regarding to next week. “Focus is important when things are going both good and bad. There’s certainly work to be done.”
