Cittadella show fight, but defeated once again against Venezia 2-0

February has not been a kind month to the Granata as they have failed to pick up any points since Jan. 13. Despite dominating the statistics, goals from Christian Gytkjaer and Bjarki Bjarkason gave Venezia the 2-0 win against Cittadella in the Venetian derby.
Edoardo Gorini was celebrating his 50th birthday in the city he was born, but his side got off to a poor start as Venezia took the lead inside three minutes. Gytkjaer was first to react to an early corner kick, sticking the ball past Elhan Kastrati.
Cittadella striker Filippo Pittarello hit the bar twice in the first half, first in the 13th minute off a header. Pittarello’s second effort came six minutes later as he rifled his shot off the post.
Gorini’s side dominated for majority of the second half, earning 11 corners against Venezia’s zero. Cittadella had 14 shot attempts after halftime, but only managed three on target.
Venezia doubled their lead with about 15 minutes remaining as Icelandic midfielder Bjarki Bjarkason slotted home a cross from Michael Svoboda.
Cittadella drops to 8th place in Serie B – only one point above the playoff line. With the victory on Wednesday night, Venezia retakes 2nd place with 51 points, one point above 3rd place Cremonese.
It’s a seventh straight defeat for Cittadella as they lose to their regional rivals. Gorini’s side will be hoping to end their rough run of form next Sunday at the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato as Cittadella host Pisa.
