Carrarese 3-0 Cittadella: Granata suffer another setback in first half thrashing
On October 26, 2024 by Jake IovineCarrarese defeated Cittadella for the first time in club history on Saturday afternoon, 3-0, as the Tuscans earned their third win of the season.
Three goals in the first half were enough to separate the two sides in the game. The loss now puts Cittadella with its second worst point tally (8) after ten games in Serie B club history.
The Granata extend their winless run to six games and are still looking for a win under new manager Alessandro Dal Canto.
“It’s difficult to make a technical analysis of this game,” Dal Canto said in his postgame conference. “I avoid saying what I actually think about the match because the game lived on the first two goals that we conceded. After the second goal until the end of the first half, we went haywire.”
Cittadella’s attacking struggles continued in Saturday’s match, failing to score a goal and registering two shots on target, both of them coming in the second half. The Granata sit last in Serie B in terms of goals scored, netting five after 10 games.
Carrarese opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Leonardo Cerri’s header found the bottom corner. The 21-year-old striker doubled the Giallazzurri‘s lead the 27th minute following a mistimed clearance by Cittadella goalkeeper Elhan Kastrati, allowing Cerri to chip the ball into an empty net.
“The two goals we gave up were two trivial errors,” Dal Canto said. “They’re too trivial for this league and in the end the game was revolved around those two errors.”
Carrarese slammed the door ten minutes later as Luigi Cherubini scored his first goal of the season, blasting his effort into the roof of the net at the edge of the box.
Cittadella had never lost to Carrarese in seven attempts going into the weekend, but that streak is snapped as the Tuscans secured an important victory in the relegation battle.
Dal Canto’s side will return midweek against Sampdoria at the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato.
“We’ll play again on Wednesday and we have to roll up our sleeves without getting too gloomy,” Dal Canto said. “The situation is already difficult.”
