Another unwanted record for Cittadella: club makes worst start after 16 games

It’s been a season of unwanted broken records for Cittadella, but the club broke another one following a 5-0 defeat to Spezia on Sunday afternoon.

Cittadella is enduring its worst start in club history after 16 games in the professional leagues. Alessandro Dal Canto’s men currently sit bottom of Serie B with 13 points with just three wins.

Never has Cittadella had 13 points or less after 16 games while in the professional leagues (in the three points per win era). The second worst start Cittadella had at this point of the season came in the 2001/02 and 2014/15 campaigns, where the Granata took 14 points from their first 16 games. The club was eventually relegated to Serie C in both of those seasons.

Due to a 0-3 forfeited loss against Pisa, the Granata‘s initial 1-1 draw in August was chalked off and counted as a defeat. Therefore, Cittadella remains at 13 points with a 3-4-9 record.

The club has already broken other unwanted negative records this season. After a 1-2 home defeat to Frosinone, the club made its longest streak without a home win, having gone 11 straight games at the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato without three points. Today, the Granata have gone 15 home games without a win, having last tasted victory at the Tombolato on Jan. 13 against Palermo.

In October, Cittadella suffered a 6-1 loss to Sassuolo: the heaviest defeat in club history which led to Edoardo Gorini losing his job. Two months later, Cittadella would suffer another five goal loss, this time against Spezia in its joint heaviest defeat.

It’s been a difficult 2024 for Cittadella, who have won five games in all competitions since January. Dal Canto’s side looks to end the year on a high note as the team hosts Cremonese, Reggiana and Palermo before New Year’s Eve, in addition to a Boxing Day road trip against relegation rivals Sudtirol.
