Giacomo Beretta
On August 20, 2021 by Jake IovineWe have reached the end of Player Insider, and one more forward to talk about. That someone is Giacomo Beretta. Signing last season in January, Giacomo has played at many clubs throughout his career.
Beretta was born on March 14th, 1992 in Varese. He started his youth at AlbinoLeffe before moving to AC Milan. He was apart of Italy’s squad in the U17 Euros in 2009. The Azzuri made it to the semifinals before crashing out to Germany. Beretta scored once in the group stage against Switzerland.
The same summer saw Beretta move to Serie A giants AC Milan, starting at the Primavera squad. Beretta picked up 11 goals in his first season with the Milan youth side. He was called up for a few first team matches, and made his debut on May 1st, 2011 against Bologna. Later that month, Beretta also was called for three U19 Euro Qualifying matches. He scored one goal in those rounds against Ukraine.
In the 11/12 season, Beretta was going back and forth between loans to Ascoli and Juve Stabia. He scored his first pro goals in a Coppa Italia match against Taranto, scoring a brace within two minutes.
The next season Beretta was loaned out to Pavia in Serie C. At Pavia, Beretta scored ten times in 29 matches, but it wasn’t enough for promotion. A series of loans followed for the striker, as the next season was this time at Lecce. Despite all the movement, Beretta showed promise and quality, as he had another great season. He scored seven times and assisted two times during the season. Lecce made it to the promotion finals, up against Frosinone for a place in Serie B.
Beretta scored in the first half, making it 2-1 to Lecce on aggregate. However, Frosinone rallied. They scored just before the break, and the match went into extra time. Beretta was sent off in overtime, as he had an incident with a Frosinone defender after a cross. Lecce fell, and gave up two goals after the red card.
Two season in Serie B with Pro Vercelli were followed. Beretta scored 8 goals in two seasons and played 58 matches for the club. The team finished mid table for two seasons in a row. Another loan the following year saw Beretta at Virtus Entella for half a season. In January of 2017 he transferred over to Carpi. Between Entella and Carpi, Beretta scored one time, however, Carpi did enough to make the promotion finals. Beretta played 3 minutes of the first leg against Benevento, which finished 0-0. Carpi couldn’t finish the job, as they lost 1-0 in the return leg, as Beretta sat on the bench for the game in Benevento.
The following summer saw Foggia buy Beretta’s loan outright, and got the striker for the upcoming Serie B season. With Foggia during the 17/18 season, Beretta managed 7 goals and 1 assist, and it was enough for the club to stay in the division. The next season Beretta joined Ascoli. Having 3 goals and 3 assists up until March, Beretta looked to push for promotion. An ankle injury saw Beretta miss the rest of the season, and was out to begin in 2019/20. He played in his first match in November since March 2019, but only played in five more after. The ankle continued to be a problem, and missed the rest of the season once again.
By the start of the 2020/21 season, Beretta was in need of fitness and game time. He joined Padova in Serie C, but did not make any appearances for the club since joining in October. It was a hard time for Beretta, as he tried to get healthy and tried to get game time.
Cittadella took the risk and signed Beretta at the end of January. Just a week later, he was ready to finally play, and after two years of disappointment and despair for the striker, he started his first game for Cittadella against Brescia. A week later, he scored the only goal in Cittadella’s 1-0 win against Pordenone. Citta pushed all the way to the promotion final against Venezia. Beretta started in the second leg down 1-0. He would eventually play 78 minutes, but the team lost the battle.
It had been a very tough time for Beretta from March 2019 through early 2021. He is finally getting the playing time he had wanted while injured, and has already scored goals from the Granata. It has been a long road back, but Beretta is here and we can’t want to see him play!
