Cittadella Women hold on for sixth straight win.
On March 19, 2023 by Jake IovineCittadella Women continue to impress after achieving their sixth straight win on Sunday, beating San Marino Academy 1-2 and staying in 2nd place.
It’s once again a clinical performance from Salvatore Colantuono’s side who keep pace at the top alongside league leaders Lazio Women. The Granata have yet to falter in 2023 as they enter the final stretch of the season.
The home side was pressed early on, but nearly took the lead against the run of play after a giveaway in the back, and San Marino forward Raffaella Barbieri almost caught Ilaria Toniolo off her line.
Once again it was Cittadella top scorer Sofia Kongouli who found the breakthrough after she rattled her shot off the crossbar and in. That’s Kongouli’s 13th goal of the season in the league, as she found the net once again in the first half.
Cittadella have been flawless going into the second half while winning, ending the games 12-1-0 when Colantuono’s side lead at the break. They made sure that kept going when Veronica Benedetti earned a penalty five minutes after halftime.
Defender Caterina Ambrosi sent San Marino keeper Francesca Olivieri the wrong way and slotted home her 5th goal of the season, while giving Cittadella a 0-2 lead on the road.
The game wasn’t over yet, as the hosts tried to force a goal to put pressure on the Granata. Toniolo had to make a big stop in the 75th minute to deny Martina Tamburini from point blank range.
San Marino managed to get a penalty in the dying moments of the match, when Laura Peruzzo was called for a handball inside the box. Barbieri tucked home a late constellation goal, but denied Cittadella another clean sheet on the road.
The dream continues for Colantuono’s side as they get their sixth straight win and take another step towards promotion. Only nine games remain in Serie B Femminile, as the Granata look forward to next weekend at home against Venetian rivals Hellas Verona.
