Amatucci scores again, Cittadella begin season with a win.

Cittadella got their 50th season as a club off to a win thanks to Francesco Amatucci’s goal before halftime, defeating Reggiana 1-0.

The Granata were looking to build off an impressive Coppa Italia victory last weekend against Empoli, opening their Serie B season against Alessandro Nesta’s Reggiana.

Cittadella dominated the first half, tallying a total of seven shots compared to Reggiana’s two. Despite the opportunities, it took the very last play of the half for the Granata to strike first. Alessio Vita’s low cross was initially missed by Filippo Pittarello, but Francesco Amatucci made no mistake from six yards out to poke the ball into the net. Amatucci has now scored twice in his first two games for Cittadella.

Edoardo Gorini’s side looked to finish their opponents early in the second half. A ball whipped into the box fell perfectly to Pittarello, who once again couldn’t get his effort on frame with his header.

In the 57th minute, Cittadella were awarded a penalty for an apparent handball inside the box from Reggiana defender Riccardo Fiamozzi. However, after a quick check at the VAR monitor, referee Daniele Rutella overturned the initial decision.

With 10 minutes to go, substitute Luca Pandolfi had a great look to finish the game inside the box, but his effort was put miles off frame.

Despite the missed chances, the Granata had done enough to get over the line and take three points in their home opener. Gorini’s side will now travel to the Stadio Ennio Tardini next Saturday to face Parma.
