Palermo become the last team to gain promotion into Serie B.

Playing against Cittadella’s rival Padova, it’s the Sicilians who book their ticket into next years Serie B season.

There’ll be no derby between Cittadella and Padova next season, as Palermo emerge victorious in their promotion playoff final. Leading 1-0 going into the second leg, the Sicilian club rarely looked troubled by Padova’s game on the night.

It only took Matteo Brunori’s first half penalty to race Palermo to a 2-0 aggregate lead, and it was enough for them to cross the finish line as winners. For the first time since bankruptcy in 2019, Palermo are back in the second division as the only Sicilian club.

With their promotion, it completes the map for all 20 teams participating in next years championship. Reggina is still not guaranteed due to financial issues. Their future will be decided on June 22nd.

Interestingly, Palermo’s last Serie B game before folding came against Cittadella on May 11, 2019. Down 2-0 needing a result to clinch promotion playoffs, goals from Davide Adorni and Davide Diaw edged the Granata into the top 8 of Serie B.

In addition to the comeback, Palermo’s last goal in the second division was scored by Aleksandar Trajkovski. The Macedonian broke Italian hearts at the same stadium during the World Cup qualifers in March, scoring a 92nd minute winner to knock Italy out of World Cup contention.
