More records in sight: Cittadella hosts AlbinoLeffe in weekend opener
On October 3, 2026 by Jake IovineCittadella is on a historic run – and more history can be written on Saturday.
The Granata can become the third club to start the season with eight straight wins in the Italian third tier if they beat AlbinoLeffe on Saturday afternoon.
Roberto Musso’s side is off to its best league start in club history, winning seven of a possible seven games. The run of form puts the Granata six points clear at the top of Girone A as the month of October begins.
Only two teams in the history of the Italian third division have won all of their opening eight games. Livorno accomplished this feat during the 1997/98 season, while the most recent team to achieve this was Modena in the 2000/01 campaign.
Should the Granata secure three points on Saturday, they will become only the third team to win their first eight games in the history of the Italian third division.
Three points will also mean a nine point cushion in first place, as second-placed Union Brescia don’t take the field until Sunday.
“This team has shown maturity in the start of the season,” Musso said in his pregame press conference. “We are improving in some aspects where we struggled. It definitely gives us an extra edge, like knowing how to read the game as it unfolds in 90 minutes.”
AlbinoLeffe proved to be a thorn in Cittadella’s side last season. La Celeste beat the Venetians home and away, scoring late goals in both games to take maximum points in the season series.
“The biggest difficulty for tomorrow’s game is approaching it in the best way, especially mentally,” Musso said. “This is a league where you see teams struggle after dropping their guard for a centimeter. We must be humble approaching this game as if we were playing against Real Madrid.”
Saturday’s game also begins a critical month for Cittadella. The team will play games against AlbinoLeffe, Novara and Arzignano before facing title challengers Union Brescia in back-to-back games, the latter being in the Coppa Italia Serie C Round of 16.
Despite the upcoming loaded schedule, Musso is only focusing on Saturday’s clash against the side from Bergamo.
“It’s definitely a demanding month,” he said. “We will need to manage our energy and everything else well. But we are only thinking about tomorrow. We don’t really like making long term plans.
“I hope in this month, with so many games, we can stay healthy so we can let the guys who spent a lot of energy in the previous games recover.”
