Cittadella Women win in Cesena and keep pace in title race

The win is the Granata‘s sixth straight result without a loss, and their fifth win in those six games. Following last weekend’s draw against Sassari Torres Femminile – where Alice Begal snatched a late goal to earn a point – Cittadella faced Cesena Femminile who sat three points behind them in the standings.
The Granata had the better of opportunities in the first half, coming close on different occasions in front of goal. Cesena’s only big chance of the half came in the 23rd minute, when Szandra Ploner’s point blank shot trickled just wide of the post.
Cittadella leading goalscorer Sofia Kongouli missed a penalty last weekend in Sardinia, but this time she wouldn’t be denied for her 10th goal of the season. The Greek international broke the deadlock in the 77th minute after she passed two Cesena defenders at the top of the box, before finessing the ball towards the far post, just out of reach of keeper Adelaide Serafino.
The hosts pushed on for an equalizer, and nearly got one in the dying minutes of stoppage time. Silvia Zanni’s free kick was met by a header on target, but the effort was too easy for Cittadella keeper Ilaria Toniolo.
It’s another victory for Salvatore Colantuono’s team that gives them a six point cushion in 5th, where only one point separates them and 2nd place Napoli Femminile. The Granata return home next weekend to face Chievo Women, who are level on points with them.
