Cittadella get solid point in Modena despite ending winning streak.

Cittadella took home a valuable draw on Saturday against Modena, despite ending their five game winning streak.

Claudio Cassano’s third goal of the season canceled out an early goal from the hosts to keep the Granata in 6th position in the league. Cittadella is now six games unbeaten in Serie B.

On the verge of a historic sixth straight win – something never done in Serie B by the club – Edoardo Gorini’s side fell behind after three minutes as Edoardo Duca riffled in a strike near post. It was the first time Cittadella conceded the first goal in five games.

The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes, pinning Cittadella in its own half. However, the Granata got their equalizer through Claudio Cassano, who scored his first goal since early October. After brilliant trickery from Valerio Mastrantonio on the right, the midfielder picked out Cassano in the box who made no mistake from six yards out.

Cittadella held Modena quiet in the second half, outshooting the hosts 3-7 after halftime. The biggest chance for Modena came in the 59th minute, where Luca Strizzolo found himself alone at the far post. His effort was blocked by a trailing Stefano Negro, who denied the striker a goal against his former club. Strizzolo again had a chance to win it on the stroke of stoppage time, but his header from a set piece couldn’t be directed towards net.

Cittadella had the finally say with the last kick of the match, as Alessio Vita struck the post from close range. Negro’s flicked header found the midfielder alone, but Vita could only find the goal pipe.

The Granata‘s winning streak has ended, but still extend their unbeaten run to six games. Gorini’s men will return home to play their final home match of 2023 against Spezia next Saturday.
