Cittadella travel to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia to face Como on Wednesday in a huge clash for both sides.
The Granata sit one point adrift from the play-off zone entering the match, while Como sits in 2nd place with a point more than 3rd place Venezia. Osain Roberts’s side look to take another step closer to Serie A promotion for the first time since the 2002/03 season.
Wednesday will be the 12th meeting between Cittadella and Como. In the reverse fixture, Como defeated the Granata 0-3 after a Patrick Cutrone brace.
“The results speak for itself: Como is one of the teams that have been well in the second part of the season,” Cittadella head coach Edoardo Gorini said in his pre-match press conference. “We have to try and limit their individual qualities and their way of playing.”
Gorini’s men have only managed to win once out of their last 15 games in Serie B, putting them on the outside looking in the playoffs with three games remaining. After a late goal conceded last weekend against Feralpisalo, the Granata will be looking to pull off a shock win in Lombardy.
Como’s faith is in their hands in the final two weeks of the league: three wins from their last three games will guarantee the Lariani a place in Serie A next season. Roberts’s side will also be aware of Venezia’s match against Catanzaro, which will be played at the same time.
Gorini believes that seven points could be enough for Cittadella to clinch playoffs for the first time as head coach. A victory in Como will go a long way for the club’s playoff ambitions.
“I ask the players to give everything to make playoffs,” Gorini said. “Football is strange and beautiful, we have to give everything to try and enter the playoffs.”
