Alessandro Dal Canto unveiled as new Cittadella head coach
On October 14, 2024 by Jake IovineCittadella officially announced Alessandro Dal Canto as the new head coach of the club on Monday afternoon.
Dal Canto takes over the team following Edoardo Gorini’s sacking on Friday, ending a three-year tenure with the Granata.
The club officially unveiled the new coach on Monday during a press conference alongside club president Andrea Gabrielli and general director Stefano Marchetti.
“I consider myself fortunate because I’m entering a team that’s in some difficulty but holds their own,” Dal Canto said in his first press conference. “The team is well physically and has an identity. I see a situation that’s normal, which comes from the negative results and not the problems itself.”
The 49-year-old manager was born a few miles down the road in Castelfranco Veneto and has managed multiple teams in the past, including Padova, Vicenza, Venezia, Juventus U19, Arezzo, Livorno, Viterbese and most recently Carrarese. Dal Canto had a 16-year playing career as a left-back, playing 100 games in Serie A and over 200 matches in the second division.
This will be Dal Canto’s first coaching experience in Serie B since managing Padova and Vicenza in the early 2010s.
“It’s good to be back in this league,” Dal Canto said. “Now I’m focused on what I have to do on the field and I have a great opportunity to exploit it in the best way possible. I can assure that I’ll dedicate 24 hours to this cause.”
Dal Canto arrives with Cittadella sitting 18th in Serie B following three straight losses. A historic 6-1 defeat against Sassuolo led Marchetti to sack Gorini: the first time he’s fired a coach while at the club.
“I’d like to thank Gorini for all he’s done in these past years,” Marchetti said in his opening statement. “He’s someone I’ve worked with for 18 years and I have to thank him for everything he’s given at Cittadella. It’s was a difficult decision that we made, but in certain times, difficult choices are made.”
The new manager will work with the team for the entire week before hosting Cosenza on Oct. 19 at the Stadio Piercesare Tombolato. The following weekend will see Dal Canto face his former club, Carrarese, on Oct. 26.
“We are not like other clubs, the strategy has been the same for 23 years,” Marchetti said. “Now we have to work hard and improve. The mental aspect of Cittadella is fundamental, even more than the technical one. We have to go back to being a team that is stubborn, that doesn’t give up and that doesn’t stop.”
